What Do You Use Photoshop For?

I have seen so much about Photoshop and heard even more about it and everyone raves about it, but before I go for Photoshop tutorials I would like to know what I will use it for. I have downloaded a few designs from www.mfcreative.co.uk/category/photoshop-tutorials/ which is fantastic because there are so many different designs in different colours to choose from. There was even a thank you note which I thought was a nice personal touch. I have often heard that people say that photo’s in magazines are Photo shopped, but I never really thought about what that meant. What is the connection between the changing of someone’s photo had to do with the designs that are available for downloading from the internet? Could one change any picture or photo with the Photoshop or is there a certain format of picture and do you need a specific program to change them? I am excited and geared up to get going, but I have no clue what to do or where to start.
